Attendance
Regular attendance is vital in helping learners make the most of the education, therapies and care opportunities available at college. Each day offers structured support for learning, physical development, communication, emotional wellbeing, and independence.
We aim to instil an expectation of attendance relevant to each pathway with a focus on employment, voluntary work and community engagement. For learners with physical disabilities, complex care needs, or mental health challenges, consistent attendance ensures continuity of care, access to specialist staff, and the chance to build confidence in a safe environment. We recognise that health needs may sometimes affect attendance, and we work closely with families to provide understanding, flexibility, and encouragement.
Three-Stage Response to Attendance Below 95%
- Contact with parents/carers to discuss reasons for absence.
- Offer practical support, such as timetable changes, care planning adjustments or wellbeing check-ins.
- Reinforce the importance of attendance for therapies and learning.
- Meeting with parents/carers and relevant staff (e.g., teachers, nursing, therapy, pastoral).
- Develop an attendance support plan tailored to the learner’s physical or mental health needs.
- Provide additional communication and monitoring to reduce barriers.
- Formal review of attendance with senior staff and external professionals if needed.
- Reassess care plans, therapy access, and mental health support.
- Agree next steps with families, focusing on solutions that prioritise the learner’s wellbeing and educational progress.
