What is a Supported Internship?

A supported internship is more than just work experience—it’s a structured programme designed for young adults aged 18–24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) It’s designed to help students move from education into employment.

Our programme, Retail Ready, is the final stage of learning—focused on building confidence, skills, and experience in a real workplace. Unlike short work experience, this is:

Up to one academic year
Unpaid (because the goal is preparation for a job or apprenticeship)
Tailored to each student’s strengths

Students may come from specialist or mainstream education. All are capable of working – they just need a little extra support to succeed.

Why Supported Internships Matter

Interns spend around 70% of their time in the workplace, supported by a Newfriars College job coach

This hands-on experience helps them to gain practical skills, build confidence and work toward paid employment. Internships last up to 12 months and are matched to each young person’s goals. It’s about creating opportunities that lead to real jobs—and real futures.

Benefits for Employers

  • Fresh perspectives: Young interns bring new ideas and enthusiasm to the workplace
  • Future talent pipeline: Opportunity to train and shape potential employees
  • Inclusive culture: Promote inclusion and diversity within the organisation
  • Ongoing Support: Job coaches provide guidance to ensure a smooth experience for both employer and intern
  • Community Reputation: Demonstrates social responsibility and strengthens community ties
  • Students assist with day-to-day tasks
  • No financial cost to the employer

How Will This Work in Practice?

Your supported internship follows the college year (September to July), including all education holidays. Here’s what a typical week looks like at Tesco (this may differ depending on employer):

Working Days:

Monday to Thursday – You’ll be at Tesco, gaining hands-on experience.
Friday – You’ll attend Newfriars College for classroom learning and reflection.

Daily Schedule:

College Day: 9:00am – 3:30pm
Placement Day: 9:15am – 3:15pm (working alongside your buddy and team)

Support on Site

You won’t be alone! A Job Coach will be based at Tesco to:

  • Adapt training materials to suit your needs.
  • Provide extra support and guidance in the workplace.
  • Monitor your progress and celebrate your achievements.

In Partnership with UHNM

Since 2018, UHNM, along with Sodexo UK, have been in partnership with Newfriars College, to provide Supported Internships for young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities.

‘Project SEARCH UHNM’ has been running for almost five years as a highly successful partnership, with our two host businesses (UHNM and Sodexo), working alongside Newfriars College (Education Provider and License Holder) to work towards‘competitive paid employment for young people with additional needs.’

Explore Different Roles at Tesco

As a supported intern, you’ll have the chance to experience a variety of departments. Each placement helps you build new skills and confidence while working as part of a friendly team. Examples include:

Dairy
Tasks: Date rotation, stocking shelves, sorting reductions/waste, rumbling.
Skills Developed: Accuracy with dates, time management, safe equipment use, communication, and health & safety confidence.

Groceries
Tasks: Stocking shelves, promotional changes, capping shelves, reductions/waste.
Skills Developed: Organisation, following instructions, safe stacking, using technology, and teamwork.

Dot.com

Each department offers real-world experience, practical skills, and the chance to work with supportive colleagues. You’ll learn to use technology, follow health & safety procedures, and develop communication and teamwork skills—all essential for future employment.

Your Buddy and Team Support

When you start your placement, you’ll be assigned a buddy—a friendly team member of staff who will guide you through your role. Your buddy is there to help you settle in, answer questions, and show you how things work.

But it’s not just your buddy—you’ll find that the whole team is supportive. Different shifts or tasks may mean you work with different people, and each one is ready to help.

What does this look like?

  • Shadow your buddy to learn the job step by step.
  • Ask questions—everyone is approachable and happy to explain.
  • Build confidence by working alongside experienced team members.

Every placement is a chance to meet new people, learn new skills, and feel part of a team that wants you to succeed.

Project Search UHNM

Project SEARCH UHNM is open to any young person aged 18-24 with an Education, Health and Care Plan (E.H.C.P). Prospective students are identified by local education providers, or can apply independently.

Applicants undergo an interview and assessment day, with representatives from all three partners, and if successful, join the programme as Newfriars College students from September to the following July.

UHNM provide a classroom base and staff facilities in the D-Block Training Room, where students are based    Monday to Friday, with their Teacher and Job Coach. Students spend 45 minutes each morning studying-

Functional English– Reading, Writing and Speaking & Listening ( to support with job applications and interviews),

Preparation for Adulthood– this includes four key areas essential for young adults with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities; Employability Skills, Independent Living Skills, Healthy Lifestyles, and Community  Inclusion/Social Interaction.

After completing their initial UHNM and departmental inductions, students spend from 10am– 3pm in their supported internship placements, with their ‘buddies’ from UHNM and Sodexo; these are staff who have been specially  selected to help students learn the job roles, and model expected work behaviour.

Interns and buddies are supported by Newfriars Staff throughout the week.

Students work in non-clinical support roles, such as portering, retail, catering, domestics, gardening, ward assisting, administration and transport services.

Interns return to the classroom base each day from 3pm-3.30pm, for a de-brief, where they can reflect on their day and discuss their progress, or any concerns they may have.

Interns complete three different work placements over the academic year (one per term), and are greatly supported by their teams and supervisors onsite.
